Get Up and Go: 5 Cool Ways to Get Around the DC Area

It’s summer, and for me, that means I’m free to do what I want. With my bike, a SmarTrip card, a friend, $20, and public transportation, I can get anywhere within a 10 mile radius from my house. Lots of you probably are sitting around at home, when instead you could be having tons of fun in Downtown Silver Spring , Downtown Bethesda , or in DC on the National Mall. Below in a list of 5 ways to get around the area (’10 Things to do There’ post coming soon!):

  1. Bike – Although it’s been around for almost 200 years, the bicycle is still a great way to go around. If you live in Silver Spring, Takoma Park, Chevy Chase, or Bethesda, then taking the Capital Crescent Trail can get you to Downtown Bethesda or DC . As an estimate, biking 1 mile on a moderately hilly trail at a moderate pace takes about 8 to 10 minutes. From Silver Spring, biking to Bethesda takes only 30 minutes, so it’s not a super fast transportation, but it will get you there in a timely matter. Plus, it’s really fun, it’s good exercise, and it saves the environment. You can find a bike map of the major trails around DC here .
  2. BOLT Buses – If you know me, then I’ve probably told you about the new, super cheap, super fun bus system run by Greyhound. The Bus system goes between DC, Philadelphia, New York, and Boston. Tickets range from $1-$25, depending on when you get them. For example, a ticket from DC to NYC on 7/22 costs $7. In addition to the low prices, the buses are equipped with Wi-Fi, power outlets, and 3 extra inches of legroom. YAY for leg room. Unfortunately, you must be 16 or up to travel alone, so you might have to bring your parents :( Also, if you’re traveling to NYC, I recommend the 6th between Canal and Grand stop; it gets less service and therefore is cheaper.
  3. Metro – If you live near DC, chances are you’ve used the Metro system before. If you haven’t, then you are missing out on a lot! MetroRail costs between $1.65 to $4.50 during rush hour and approx. $1.85 all other times, and MetroBus costs $1.25 with a SmarTrip card or $1.35 in cash. I recommend getting a SmarTrip card if you will ride a lot. They cost only $5 and make travel much simpler. Also, if you will be using Metro a lot on a certain day, then get an all day pass for $7.80. You can find more info about Metro fares here . You can find a map here .
  4. Segway – A three hour segway tour of DC can cost upwards of $65, but if you’ve got money to burn, then it could be great fun! A segway is basically a two wheeled motor controlled device, but instead of sitting, the rider stands on their segway. Unfortunately, you have to be 16 to ride for most segway tours. If you’re old enough, and have the money, I recommend trying it sometime. It sounds like lots of fun!
  5. Walking – It’s old fashioned, but walking is also good for the environment and good for your health. Plus, it’s free. Walking is also a great way to experience nature. So next time you are headed towards a nearby location, such as the grocery store, pool, or metro station, then be sure not to drive.
